The Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) has initiated the preparation of its strategic plan for the next five years, building on the success of its 2022-2026 strategy, which achieved approximately a 96 percent completion rate. This high completion rate shows the effectiveness of the previous strategic roadmap in achieving its objectives. Haitham bin Salem Al Salmi, CEO of the Muscat Stock Exchange, stated, "the stock exchange has begun preparing its strategic plan for the next five years, which includes introducing new financial products, developing technology plans, and defining the features of the stock exchange as a group, including its listing as a public shareholding company, indicating that these plans are being completed and prepared in the current stage." This development follows a significant increase in average daily trading volume, which rose from less than OMR2 million to about OMR60 million per day.
Past Strategy Successes Detailed
The Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) launched a strategy in 2022 that aimed to provide an efficient investment environment, aligning with global standards and the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. This strategic direction sought to enhance the exchange's role in the Omani economy and improve its attractiveness to investors. The initiatives under this strategy have contributed to substantial growth across key market indicators over the past two years, demonstrating progress towards its stated goals. The full approach taken by the MSX in implementing this strategy has been a critical factor in its success, fostering a more strong and dynamic financial market.
The market value of listed public shareholding companies experienced a significant increase, rising from 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 38 percent. This expansion notes the growing contribution of publicly traded entities to the nation's economic output and reflects increased investor confidence and market capitalization. The growth in market valuation indicates a broader participation and strengthening of the equity market within Oman's financial landscape, signalling a positive trend for the national economy. This substantial rise in market capitalization demonstrates the increasing depth and breadth of the Omani stock market.
Additionally, the average daily trading volume has shown remarkable improvement since the strategy's implementation. This volume represents a growth of 30 times, showing a sharp rise in market activity and liquidity. The substantial increase in trading volume points to enhanced engagement from investors and a more dynamic trading environment on the Muscat Stock Exchange. This surge in trading volume is a key indicator of improved market efficiency and investor participation. The sustained high levels of daily trading volume reflect the market's increasing ability to facilitate transactions and absorb larger orders.
Future Plans and New Products
The Muscat Stock Exchange has successfully attracted foreign investors who had not previously traded on the platform, according to Haitham bin Salem Al Salmi, CEO of the Muscat Stock Exchange. Mr. Al Salmi stated, "the Muscat Stock Exchange has succeeded in attracting foreign investors who have never traded on the Muscat Stock Exchange before, whether at the regional or global level." This influx has coincided with foreign direct investments beginning to enter the market, marking a new phase of international engagement for the exchange. The successful attraction of new foreign capital notes the MSX's growing international appeal and its efforts to diversify its investor base.
In preparation for future growth, the Muscat Stock Exchange has also completed all requirements for its inclusion in the FTSE Global Index. This significant achievement positions the exchange for increased visibility and accessibility to a wider range of international investors, potentially attracting further capital inflows. Efforts are currently underway to finalize new financial products, including exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with their completion anticipated within the coming months. These new product offerings are expected to provide investors with more diverse options and enhance the market's liquidity and sophistication.
Looking ahead, the exchange plans to offer the remaining percentage of shares for the maritime transport company affiliated with the Asyad Group. Haitham bin Salem Al Salmi confirmed this, stating, "the next phase will witness the offering of the remaining percentage of shares of the maritime transport company affiliated with the Asyad Group, after 20 percent of its shares had already been offered." This upcoming offering is expected to further deepen the market and provide new investment opportunities.
Investor Confidence and Outlook
The Muscat Stock Exchange anticipates its market value will reach approximately 40 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) following the upcoming listing of Omifco. This projection indicates continued growth in the exchange's contribution to the Omani economy and reflects strong confidence in future market expansion. The expected increase in market capitalization further solidifies the MSX's role as a vital component of Oman's economic framework.
The number of companies listed on the exchange with a market value exceeding OMR100 million has more than doubled, increasing from 14 to over 29. This expansion reflects an increase in the size and number of significant companies trading on the MSX. The growth in larger capitalized firms points to strengthening market depth and diversification within the Omani financial landscape, offering investors a broader selection of established companies. This trend shows the increasing maturity and attractiveness of the Muscat Stock Exchange as a platform for substantial corporate growth.
